What makes these products unique?

Many of today’s oils which are sold as essential oils, are derived with harsh chemicals, diluted or fractionated in laboratories.  Cheap copies bring cheap results and have the potential to be very toxic substances.  Therefore, it is imperative to take great care in choosing high-quality organic essential oils.

Essential oils are not simple substances and definitely deserve the respect of proper education.

Susan Neary, Principal of The Modern School of Ancient Therapies educates her students using the highest quality therapeutic-grade essential oils from Young Living.  Susan adds “Young Living offer pure, unadulterated essential oils and blends from organic, healthy plants. It should be noted that some essential oils are produced for the flavour and fragrance industries and do not fulfil therapeutic standards.  Such oils are not considered for use in our training school.”

Indeed, a number of different factors need to be considered to ascertain the purity and quality of an essential oil: the environment in which plants are grown, climate and weather, altitude, soil, time of harvest and growing techniques.

Essential oils can be distilled or extracted in different ways and have dramatic effects on their chemistry and medicinal action.  Oils that are distilled two or three times are obviously not as potent as oils that are only distilled on one occasion.  Oils that are subjected to high heat and pressure have a distinctly simpler and inferior profile of chemical constituents, since excessive heat and temperature fractures and breaks down many of the delicate aromatic compounds within the oil – some of which are responsible for its therapeutic action.

Essential oils should be bottled as it comes from the still, with none of its natural constituents removed and with nothing added.  The container and its lid, or seal must be non-reactive, air tight, and a shield from light, such as bottles of brown, amber or blue glass.

Gas Chromatography is a method of testing essential oils for purity.  This process profiles the oils chemical composition and will also show up any substances used in the harvesting or growing of the plants such as pesticides.  In general the more an essential oil is interfered with chemically or physically, the more its therapeutic powers are reduced.

Susan continues “A therapeutic grade essential oil is defined as one that is specifically distilled from plants that are grown wild or cultivated organically.  Plants should be from the proper botanical genus and species.  No chemical fertilizers are added to the soil, and crop cultivation is free of herbicides and pesticides.  Plants should be extracted by steam distillation at minimum temperature and pressures, as was done in ancient times.”
